What to Wear for a Maternity Photoshoot
What to Wear for a Maternity Session | TL Photography
Your maternity session is a beautiful way to capture this special time's glow, anticipation, and excitement. Choosing the right outfit can make all the difference in how you look and feel during your session. Below are some tips to help you select the perfect look for timeless, flattering, and stunning maternity portraits.
1. Choose Form-Fitting or Flowing Dresses
Maternity photos are all about highlighting your beautiful bump!
• Form-fitting dresses accentuate your belly and create an elegant silhouette.
• Flowy gowns add movement and a dreamy, ethereal feel to your images.
• Dresses with texture (lace, chiffon, or silk) add depth and dimension to your photos.
💡 Tip: My client closet includes a selection of gorgeous maternity gowns—let me know if you’d like to borrow one for your session!
2. Stick to Soft, Neutral, or Earthy Tones
Muted, natural colors photograph beautifully and complement most skin tones. Some great options include:
✔ Soft pastels (blush, ivory, light blue)
✔ Warm neutrals (beige, taupe, camel)
✔ Earthy tones (sage green, rust, deep brown)
❌ Avoid neon colors or busy patterns—they can be distracting and take away from the timeless feel of your photos.
3. Show Off Your Shoulders or Belly (If You Want!)
Off-the-shoulder gowns, bandeau tops, or open-front dresses can create a romantic and feminine look. If you’re comfortable, a fitted crop top with a flowing skirt can also be a beautiful way to highlight your growing bump.
💡 Tip: If you want a mix of covered and exposed belly looks, bring a second outfit to switch things up!
4. Coordinate (But Don’t Match) with Your Partner & Kids
If your partner or family will be in the photos, choose outfits that complement yours without being too matchy.
• For Partners: Neutral button-down shirts, henleys, or knit sweaters work well.
• For Kids: Keep their outfits soft and simple, like a linen dress or a cozy sweater.
5. Keep Jewelry & Accessories Minimal
Your bump is the focus, so keep accessories simple!
• Dainty jewelry adds a nice touch without overpowering your look.
• If you love hats, wide-brim styles can add a stylish, boho feel.
6. Pamper Yourself Before Your Session
A little self-care before your shoot can make you feel extra confident!
✔ Schedule a manicure (your hands will be in a lot of shots)
✔ Moisturize your skin for a natural glow
✔ Consider professional hair & makeup for a polished look
7. What About Shoes?
Many maternity photos are barefoot for a natural, organic feel. If you do wear shoes, go for neutral flats, sandals, or classic heels.
